Tobacco curing in western Tanzania depends heavily on woodfuel. Alliance One Tobacco Tanzania Limited commissioned Wahifadhi Investment Limited to establish, with field evidence, how much firewood the curing operation actually consumes, how much wood the surrounding landscape can supply on a renewable basis, and what it would take to close the gap between the two.
The assessment covered Tabora, Kaliua and Sikonge districts and combined household and curing-barn surveys with forest inventory plots in miombo woodland, so that recorded consumption could be compared directly against measured standing stock and annual increment.
